From the start of Hypnotic, something just feels off. Why in the sam hill are Robert Rodriguez and Ben Affleck in a movie that seems like a typical police procedural? And then it’s revealed that the story is really about those who have powers to put people under hypnosis to make them do things suchContinue reading “‘Hypnotic’ Feels Like A Hybrid Of Better Sci-Fi Existential Thrillers”

We’re Better Than This, Aren’t We?
The recent arrest of Ruby Franke, a supposed “influencer” who spent years physically, emotionally and mentally abusing her children online while we all watched and said nothing makes me wonder “Aren’t we better than this?” Even her sisters, Ellie Mecham and Julie Griffiths Deru, said in a statement they kept quiet “for the sake ofContinue reading “We’re Better Than This, Aren’t We?”
How The VMA’s Robin Thicke/Miley Cyrus Performance Shows Our Hypocrisy
I had never heard of Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana until people started talking about the show as it had become popular with Millennials in the latter part of the 2000s. I think they referenced it in Zombieland at one point. I had pretty much stopped watching The Disney Channel in the late 1980s andContinue reading “How The VMA’s Robin Thicke/Miley Cyrus Performance Shows Our Hypocrisy”
Guy Ritchie’s ‘Fortune’ Experiences ‘Operation’al Exhaustion
By now, you know what to expect when you’re seeing a Guy Ritchie movie. He seems to have a technique that is basically putting a lot of stuff in your face with a lot of British blokes who drop the F-bomb as if it’s punctuation. The trend catapulted him in the late 1990s/early 2000s whenContinue reading “Guy Ritchie’s ‘Fortune’ Experiences ‘Operation’al Exhaustion”
The Strange Case Of ‘The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen’
A movie like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen could have been the best movie of the year or the 2000s. It looked like a whole bunch of fun as a concept. Based on the graphic novels by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill, it mainly was about public domain characters like Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Dr.Continue reading “The Strange Case Of ‘The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen’”
There Will Be Blood: The Civil War Brewing Inside The Republican Party
Empires collapse from within. You need only to look at history to see that it’s usually the people who the leaders once trusted and/or felt were beneath them who rise up. A year ago if you told me that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp would tell the Republicans in his state he wasn’t going to sidestepContinue reading “There Will Be Blood: The Civil War Brewing Inside The Republican Party”
‘Tales From The Hood’ A Maddening Mixture Of Mischief And Macabre
A movie like Tales from the Hood is mostly a horror flick. But just like Alfred Hitchcock, director Rusty Cundieff throws in enough humor and mischief along with the macabre to remind us that it’s still a movie and we need to relax. The movie poster features a skull wearing sunglasses and a gold tooth.Continue reading “‘Tales From The Hood’ A Maddening Mixture Of Mischief And Macabre”
‘BS High’ Takes Viewers To School On Narcissists, Con Jobs & Athletic Scams
A con is a derivative of a “confidence scheme,” a type of scam where someone will build confidence in their mark in order to rip them off. Sometimes it just takes a few minutes. Other times, it takes several months. In the end, they’ll get what they want if they choose their prey wisely. TheContinue reading “‘BS High’ Takes Viewers To School On Narcissists, Con Jobs & Athletic Scams”
Violence Will Continue As Politicians Spread Hate, Division For Votes
One thing I learned as a crime reporter – acts of violence are usually personal. Most murders are crimes of passion. People have arguments and it gets out of hand and one person is killed. Despite living in towns that were supposed to be away from the “big city crime,” I did see a lotContinue reading “Violence Will Continue As Politicians Spread Hate, Division For Votes”
An Easy Pass For ‘Vacation Friends 2’
Adam Sandler has been criticized for choosing to make movies that are in major travel destinations so he can enjoy his days off from filming seeing the sights. It started with 50 First Dates filmed in Hawai’i and Blended was filmed in South Africa and The Do-Over was filmed in the Savannah area. I mean,Continue reading “An Easy Pass For ‘Vacation Friends 2’”
