Accountability Isn’t Revenge

Within 48 hours of the Democrats retaking the House and Senate, Hakeem Jeffries, the current House Minority Leader, is really making his push to be Speaker of the House more unlikely.

This isn’t high school, Hakeem. You don’t immediately just get to become Speaker because of seniority. There’s another election for that and he’s acting like it’s going to be business as usual if he becomes Speaker. In fact, it’s just like a bureaucrat in school administration telling the bullied student to shake hands with the psychopathic bully and continue on with algebra and English literature. This isn’t some bully who blew raspberry as a student got up to speak before the class making it appear like a fart. This is the bully who physically threatens a weaker student leaving marks.

And if something isn’t done, things will get worse. Someone said online in criticism to Jeffries that accountability isn’t revenge. I totally agree. People didn’t turn out to vote just the Republicans and supporters of the Trump Administration will promise not to do it again.

Yes, Merrick Garland screwed up. Liz Cheney was able to risk her own career. Even though I have issues with her, she was willing to do it because it was more important. Jeffries and Chuck Schumer, current Senate Minority Leader, are acting like it’s 1992 and we need to move forward in the post-Cold War era to rebuild America’s economy following the recession. Garland put his faith in the notion the American voters wouldn’t bring Trump back.

But now it’s pretty obvious, if we don’t hold people accountable for the ICE raids and killings, Pete Hegseth’s inabilities as Defense Secretary and Trump starting a war in Iran, then something worse can happen in 2028.

Accountability is what our judicial system did to go after those who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection coup attempt. Revenge is when Trump pardoned all of them, even the violent offenders. Revenge is when Trump has refused to help states that he didn’t win in the Electoral College. After John McCain lost in 2008, he tried to calm people down as he spoke pleasantly congratulating Barack Obama. People booed and jeered at him. It started before Trump but we can make sure it doesn’t get worse.

Trump supporters have wanted revenge not only at Democrat elected officials but the people who support him. They have voted for Trump three times because they want regular Americans to suffer. I’ve heard transgender people say they have been threatened as they think Trump as President means they get to act like it’s The Purge.

So far Jeffries has received over 128,000 votes in his Congressional district. But that doesn’t mean all Americans want him as Speaker. Even people in his own district didn’t vote for him. They are people in America who want Jeffries, a black man, to be in chains and forced to work on farms and ranches.

They want a return to the slave trade. They want America turning into Gilead. They want a return to when it’s just landowners who have a certain amount of acreage to vote. Accountability is making sure that never happens.

The Speaker of the House will be the second in line to succeed the Presidency. This makes me wonder if Jeffries has higher aspirations. It makes me also wonder if he has something to hide.

The Trump Administration has used the Presidency to enrich the net worth of the President and his family. That means our tax dollars have gone into their pockets with no oversight. Trump ran in 2024 as revenge and to stay out of prison. The Department of Government Efficiency ruined regular people’s lives. Roe vs. Wade was overturned. Rape victims can’t get abortions. Neither can those with risky pregnancy. Flock Cameras are being used to illegally track people.

And this has only happened in the last 10 years. If we don’t hold people accountability, there’s no reason to have a fucking government like ours anyways. Jeffries is more concerned about his next campaign in 2028. It’s obvious he doesn’t want to lose his lobbyists and donors. Cheney was willing to fall on her own sword.

I don’t think Jeffries would even bother to unsheath his just as a gesture.

What do you think? Please comment.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
