Well, after 92 days of no sign of life, Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell appeared in the Capitol Building. But the appearance is just proof we need both age limits and term limits in all forms of elected office.
Watching McConnell smile that Cheshire cat creepy grin made him appear to look like he had no idea where he was going. He probably was just happy to get out of the house and take a ride in the car like a few dogs I’ve had.
At 84, McConnell isn’t even the oldest person in the U.S. Senate. That’s Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley who turns 93 on Thursday, Sept. 17. Then there’s Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders who just turned 85 on Sept. 8. Also Grassley is the President Pro Tem, the second in line as presiding over the Senate after the Vice-President. And he’s the third in line to be named President in the event the incumbent President dies or is found unable to perform the duties and neither the Vice-President nor House Speaker can fill that spot.
However if the current President does die, I’m sure the powers that be will keep him around for about a month or so afraid to pass the torch to J.D. Vance. (I’m sure they’re already used to a foul odor from him.) His mental abilities so far have shown he is unable to do his duties as he’s closed the Kennedy Center because he can’t put his name on it.
What a crazy fucking time to be alive?!
The sad part is if McConnell wasn’t a Republican, there would be calls for him to resign now. He spent a fourth of the year on paid sick leave, something a lot of people don’t get. (And if they do, they got to jump though hoops to even get it. Even if you have a sick day and you’re vomiting black liquid vile, some places will still demand you at least call in to see if anyone needs any help.)
As some towns around here are doing away with Flock cameras, videos of their town council meetings show we really need to do something like 20 years ago. In nearby Stilwell, Okla., the mayor who is in her 70s at one point bangs a gavel loud as people question the removal of public comments. I remember there was a time in which Fort Gibson, Okla. went through about three mayors in less then two years because they all died. When I worked in Wagoner, Okla. covering the news, two council members died within a few months. Then when I covered a Plains, Ga. Town Council, one of the members was on oxygen and she later passed.
When McConnell was first sworn into office on Jan. 3, 1985, Georgia Sen. John Ossoff wasn’t even conceived. And he’s the senior Senator from Georgia st 39. Yet people have always questioned his age as he’s too young, even though anyone over 30 can run for the U.S. Senate of their state.
McConnell has had health problems in the past freezing up during speaking. We all freeze up but it looked like he had a TIA. Yet it appears to he one sided. President Joe Biden was forced to step down following the first Presidential debate. But his cognitive abilities are still far and above the current President who screamed about Haitian immigrants “eating the dogs; they’re eating the cats.” Almost nothing he has said since Jan. 20, 2025 has been correct. He rambles with incoherent muttering not making any sense. And just last week when Biden still battling stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer managed to stand with respect at the 9/11 memorial in New York City. The current President could barely stay awake at the memorial at the Pentagon.
In 1993 around this time, my paternal grandfather died. His mother, my great grandfather, was in her early 90s and couldn’t hardly move reduced to being in a wheelchair. I think she may have not fully understood whose funeral it was. She didn’t make it to my great uncle’s funeral months later. My grandmother said she had forgotten her son had died asking where he was when she visited the nursing home. After that she basically lived the rest of her life laid up in bed unaware of a lot of things.
McConnell reminds me of my great grandmother the last time I saw her alive. The Republicans got him to vote for their causes. This say this is elder abuse. For what McConnell has done, he deserves no sympathy. He used others and now they using him.
And as former President Barack Obama has announced the death of Sunny, their Portuguese water dog at 13, people I have seen are more sympathetic and sadden about that. Maybe it’s just fitting we care more about the former First Dog than a man who didn’t think 9/11 relief workers needed better health care.
