I loved the first two Scary Movie flicks even though the second one wasn’t as good but that could’ve been because of the rushed production. But there still was some great moments especially by Chris Elliott, the late Tim Curry and a scene where Shorty (Marlon Wayans) is rolled up in a bedsheet by a big living marijuana plant and smoked.
Whenever the first two movies weren’t really trying to parody horror movies and do their own thing is where they found their comic gold. But a long history of problem between The Wayans Brothers and The Weinstein Brothers almost destroyed the franchise in the early 2010s. But now that the Wayans have regained the rights, you’d think they’d bring their A-game. But they resort to the same problems the ones had when the Wayans were forced out.
There’s no set up to many of the so-called jokes and fourth wall breaks ad nauseum and cameos that aren’t funny as people think they are. The opening has Teyana Taylor doing her regular loud mouth animated routine. But thankfully she’s absent for the rest of the movie. Yet there’s not many good jokes after that, if you’re still watching.
Most of the movie is a parody of the fifth Scream with a few references to Get Out and Sinners. The first half of the movie has not one single great joke. Instead the movie resorts to the style of Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer (who were credited with writing the first one even though it was reported a legal issue). A gag that isn’t funny is repeated over and over to fill run time. Whenever they can’t produce a good joke, they just have a character being hit, punched, slapped, knocked out or hit by a car.
Elliott reappears in a parody of Longlegs that looks and feels like it was added in post-production as it’s not connected to the rest of the movie. Marlon and Shawn Wayans are back in their roles as Shorty and Ray respectively. Anna Faris and Regina Hall are back but they’re reduced to supporting roles. Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri and David Sheridan also appear again in scenes that look like they were shot over a handful of days each.
There’s a great joke combining The Substance with White Chicks. And there’s another scene of people live streaming at a crime scene that has some bite on the influencer culture and Shorty does a live stream as he and his friends call out the culture. And finally the last good joke is a Michael parody of Jermaine Jackson with Kenan Thompson that’s streaming only Tubi.
That’s it. That’s all the good material. A mid-credit parody of Nosferatu called Brosferatu has a nice Blacula joke to it. But by then, most viewers have given up and quit watching.
The tagline on the first movie included “No Sequel.” That would be a good idea from here on out.
