No Big Splash For ‘Thrash’

It’s Shark Week and movies like Thrash feel they are stuck in some pre-Sharknado world where people may still believed killer sharks were as dangerous as they really are.

Yes, they have killed people but not at the rate many movies would have you believe. Thrash began under the production of Sony Pictures before being sold to Netflix, which is never a good sign. The plot has a hurricane so destructive it’s going to hit a coastal town and the flood waters will bring in sharks chomping on the townspeople. Most of them are so generic I really didn’t care if they lived or died.

Pheobe Dynover is a pregnant woman who finds herself in a house with a young agoraphobic woman played by Whitney Peaks. Then there are three siblings whose foster parents are horrible people and instant chum for the sharks. The movie is written and directed by Tommy Wirkola who made Dead Snow which wasn’t a perfect movie but it was a wild ride for what it’s worth.

The special effects here aren’t impressive and I got the feeling Sony sold the rights to Netflix without spending another dollar and Netflix just scrapped together what they had. It’s 86 minutes with credits and it feels like a demo of a better movie.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
