Raccoons walk a fine line like opossums. They’re not exactly bad animals but they have the abilities to be pests. Some call them “trash pandas” for the ways they go after garbage and food for cats and dogs that’s left out.
I used to have problems with opossums who would give me a busted look before they turned and walked away sometimes fast when I caught them eating the cat food. And if you have chickens, be careful because they can be a predators. But it’s the Lone Ranger mask-like black fur around their eyes that make them more appealing.
They can turn rabid as well as be vicious just because they’re afraid of humans. But there’s cell phone videos of a raccoon wanting a doughnut through a drive-thru and another walking up to a guy’s boot and tapping it before running away. And Rocket Raccoon has become one of the most popular characters of the MCU.
Now, Rocket has competition with Jimothy in the Seattle area. Jimothy has a spinal deformity and he’s become a viral sensation. Type “Jimothy” on Google search and an animated version will run across the screen. Bobbleheads are being produced with proceeds going to support animal rescue. He’s even become a mascot at sporting events.
For the most part, we need stories like this as it’s one of those things that bring people together. Politicians and world leaders want to divide us on socioeconomic, skin color and religion. With the World Cup over, these reminders that borders don’t really exist and we’re all in this together need to be appreciated and celebrated.
There’s even some speculation there’s more than one Jimothy and his spinal deformity, which may to short spine syndrome, may have something to do with pollution. People from both sides of the aisle are stepping up to push back against date centers and the abundance of Flock cameras creating a real-life Big Brother. Wildlife is also going to be affected more by deforestation, smog and pollution.
But even though it might look cute as he runs, I echo the concerns from animal and wildlife experts to leave Jimothy alone.
