No Sympathy For Predators

In the last few days, the world lost two sexual predators. They went by the names Phil Robertson and Ed Gale. You might remember them as celebrities but they were sexual predators more or less.

Robertson, the patriarch of the facade that is Duck Dynasty capitalized off the redneck craze because it was hard for people to believe the people behind the million-dollar business Duck Commanders were a bunch of yuppie-looking white boys. I tried watching Duck Dynasty but found it to be fake in every which way possible.

I know the wives were not going to let their husbands look like Tom Hanks from Cast Away. Even Rita Wilson said she was glad when Hanks got rid of that scruffy beard. Yes, some women do like the lumbersexual look. But not those women. I’m pretty sure a little Hollywood magic and make-up was used. Just as Paul Reubens pretended to be Pee-wee Herman for over a decade, they pretended to be “rednecks.”

The problem is the Internet was readily available and the lie was exposed. Worse, Phil’s noxious behavior was exposed. Did this man ever fucking smile a day in his life? As a homophobe and pedophile, I’m sure he smiled at some things cold-hearted people smile at, not those who claimed to be Christians. While it’s not known that he ever sexually molested anyone, he did say that men should marry their wives when they are 15-16, which pretty much makes rape legal.

But let’s face it, Phil started dating his wife, Marsha Kay Carroway, when she was 13 and he was 17-18. Then he married her when she was 15. He was about three-and-a-half years older. While that might not have mattered if she was 23 and he was 27, at that stage, it’s disgusting. And even if it was a different time frame, it’s still disgusting.

Phil passed away from complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. And while I offer my condolences to his family, I really can’t be empathetic. They got rich and famous off a lie. I also think their hostility toward the Obama Administration and a changing world led to Trumpism. I don’t doubt their love for the outdoors but conservative Christians don’t have the monopoly on outdoor life. You’d think they’d be more concerned about Earth conservation but that would be considered “woke.”

At the end of the day, Phil is just another bigoted Boomer who smugly thought he was better than everyone else. I’m ok if people want to have certain thoughts and beliefs. I’m even fine with people who do waterfowl hunting. But “Christians” cherry-pick what they want to like and believe.

On the flip side, Ed Gale born with dwarfism became one of the go-to actors whenever it was needed for someone to perform in a suit or costume as a small character. He famously appeared in Howard the Duck in 1986 and then was used as a double for Chucky in the Child’s Play movies. He would also appear regularly as dwarf characters in movies like O Brother, Where Art Thou and the outrageously offensive Tiptoes, which has Gary Oldman playing a dwarf. It’s the type of movie, you think would be a SNL parody but it’s 100 percent intended as a serious movie.

But in 2023, Gale’s stature as a famous actor would be sullied when he was arrested in an online child sex sting. Gale was accused of trying to solicit sex from someone he thought was 14. It was actually “Creep Catchers Unit” working with the Los Angeles Police Department to find online predators.

Gale was one of the many arrested and remained under investigator until his death on May 27. The Los Angeles County District’s Attorney’s Office reported Gale’s case probably would have been filed as a misdemeanor. Regardless, he knew what he was doing. The question now was if this was an isolated case or did Gale do this a lot in the past and no one said anything.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
