I Hope Mitch McConnell Is Still Alive (Seriously, I Do)

As of today, it’s been 44 days, just over six weeks, since Sen. Mitch McConnell was hospitalized from a reported fall. Not much has been released publicly about the long-time Republican Senator from Kentucky.

Earlier this month, his office released a photo of him and his wife, Elaine Chao, from what appears to be a hospital room. But people were quick to question it because it didn’t look real as Chao’s hand seems to disappear into McConnell’s arm. Also, he’s wearing regular clothes instead of a hospital gown. Because everything is so secret has everyone thinking there’s something rotten in Denmark.

Now, his office has released another photo of McConnell and Chao in a hospitality room. And people are questioning more if McConnell is either alive or healthy enough to return to his duties. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has demanded McConnell make a verbal proof of life or resign.

Some people have criticized Beshear for not doing roo much. But it’s a slippery slope. McConnell may well be recovering but unable to speak well enough which is a symptom of having a stroke. It’s sometimes even impossible to speak or say the right thing. So Beshear doesn’t want to appear to be an inconsiderate person even though McConnell has been for most of his time in the Senate.

But if McConnell is unable to return or even dead, it shows just how down the rabbit hole the current Republican Party has become. The criticism of gerrymandering is that politicians choose their own voters instead of the other way as it should be. However this is cheating people of representation because they’re afraid voters might not keep them in power.

And statistically, more voters are Democrats or seem to agree with the Democrat Party. Yet gerrymandering is putting Republicans in power in districts or states where they’re in the minority. It seems every election cycle for the past few decades, Republicans are showing they don’t have much of an agenda that benefits the greater good.

By keeping McConnell’s health secret, they are doing what they can to break the law and laugh about it in our faces. It’s like the 1993 movie Dave where Kevin Kline is a regular citizen who looks like the President Bill Mitchell, who goes into a stroke where he probably want recover. Rather than alert everyone, the corrupt chief of staff Bob Alexander (Frank Langella), wants to make Vice-President Gary Nance (Ben Kingsley) the scapegoat in a brewing scandal. Ergo Nance is forced to resign and Alexander will be appointed to the VP position. And then it’ll be announced Mitchell isn’t going to recover and Alexander will be President.

It sounds crazy but it feels we’re at that moment now in history. We’re doing things we’ve accused other countries of doing. And every accusation is a confession. People never see themselves on the wrong side of history and I wonder what people think makes this the right thing to do.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
