I want to wish Mel Brooks a Happy 100th Birthday. It’s not a hyperbole to say that Brooks helped changed TV, movies and even the theater over the years with Get Smart, The Producers (both the 1967 version and the Broadway musical), Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs and so many more.
As a producer himself, he gave David Lynch total control on The Elephant Man and proved that a remake like The Fly can be taken seriously with groundbreaking gory make-up and special effects.
He also helped Barry Levinson get his foot in the door as well as calling Albert Brooks (no relation) one of the funniest people he knows. His collaborations with Carl Reiner (who was more than a best friend), Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman and Dom DeLuise created comic gold for many generations to enjoy.
And with a sequel to Spaceballs set for 2027, it looks like Brooks isn’t ready for retirement. When you’re one of the kings of comedy, you stay on your throne your whole life. And it’s good to be the king.
What’s your favorite movie of his? Please comment.
