I have to brag a little on my mechanic. Earlier this year my AC compressor went out and I had been putting it off and off to get it fixed as I didn’t really need it during the winter. Then my water heater at home went out so I really needed to get that fixed as a top priority.
So since it was still Spring, I did the water heater first and waited as long as I could until the AC issue.
And June in Oklahoma can be hot and humid. So I took it to my usual mechanic J&J Auto Services in nearby Wagoner, Okla.
They got it done on Monday in less than four hours. But I was surprised they went a little further.
Last year, a deer near the lake ran out in the road and clipped the driver side rear bumper. As far as I know the deer was stunned but I looked in the rear view mirror and it ran off into the woods probably with a story to tell its friends and family.
The bumper hangs off a little. It wasn’t a major damage and I tried to fix it myself but couldn’t.
So when I went to go pick up my Escape from the mechanic, they had fixed it. I was surprised. They didn’t charge me any extra.
We seem to have this biased view that mechanics are bad people. They’re not. You can’t keep screwing over people and expect to get repeat service.
People who have grease on their clothes and dirt on their hands at the end of the work day have more integrity than people who work in insurance companies finding ways to help the bottom line even if someone dies from a preventable surgery.
I’m fortunate to have a great auto mechanic as well as a wonderful oil change garage, Chris’ Quick Lube. They are quick even when they are busy.
And then there’s Fort Gibson Tire & Auto who have given me great service over the last decade or so. All these places are very close by to where I live.
