Short Takes

I’m still having issues with my laptop so I’ve been typing stuff in the Notes app of my phone and sending it to my email so I can copy and paste online.

And to be honest, some days I like to take a break from posting. But that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate all of you who read and subscribe. Some days I don’t really have much to say and I’ve had a few back pain issues recently. Thanks again for ready and subscribing.

Recently I watched some movies that were ok but I didn’t have much to say about them.

“Apex” is like Deliverance Down Under as Charlize Theron plays a grieving widow who goes kayaking in a national forest park in Australia but runs into a serial killer played by Taron Egerton and a cat-and-mouse survival action thriller. Even at an hour and a half, it feels a little long as there’s the typical catch and escape tropes. But there is some great cinematography. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and Egerton is good as the villain.

“Crime 101v wants so hard to be the next “Heat” but without that hard grittiness. Chris Hemsworth plays a high-level jewel thief who is tracked by a LAPD detective played by Mark Ruffalo who seems to understand and appreciate him. The cop also has a rocky marriage to his wife played by Jennifer Jason Leigh who barely has enough screen time to be relevant.

Halle Berry is an insurance broker who becomes connected. But none of it seems to matter as much.

Then there’s “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” which is a spinoff of the franchise set between the third and fourth movie meaning both John Wick (Keanu Reeves) and Charon (Lance Reddick) have supporting roles. Ana de Armas plays one of the ballerina assassins under the Ruska Roma. It was filmed shortly before Reddick’s death in March of 2023 and spent two years on the shelf before being released with reshoots in 2024. You can tell there are some pacing issues.

It takes a while to get into the action, but when it does, it’s well made and keeps you interested. Yet like the other movies here, I can sit through them once but really don’t have a desire to quickly watch them again.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
