“Friday Night at Freddy’s 2” might be one of the most useless, extraneous, pointless sequels ever made.
The first movie came out in 2023 almost 10 years after the video game franchise started. During that time, there was “The Banana Splits Movie,” “Willy’s Wonderland” and horror short “The Hug.”
Still there could have been some excitement and thrills to the first movie which plays it safe with a PG-13 rating.
To be honest, there’s just so much you can do with the concept of creepy animantronics creatures that may be possessed but are evil and killers. The first movie is barely memorable while the second will be quickly forgotten once the credits roll.
It’s basically just a filler movie for the already planned third movie. And the ending will leave you very upset as it sets up the third movie. Unless you’ve played the game religiously, a lot of it won’t click and it’s mostly because creator Scott Cawthorn is credited as the primary writer and he really doesn’t know how to write a good movie that can relate to both fans and newcomers.
The marketing makes it appear McKenna Grace is in a big role but she isn’t. Instead we get Josh Hutcherson and Piper Rubio chewing up the scenes with boring dialogue that they seem to be reading off cue cards off screen. Elizabeth Lail as a police officer suffering trauma from the first movie seems like she’s in a total different movie.
And while Matthew Lillard does appear in a few scenes, we don’t even get the satisfaction of a “Scream” reunion as Skeet Ulrich makes another glorified cameo like Lillard.
There’s also a lot of talk about FazFest which has little screentime as it’s been built up for the first half.
I guess this is another thing that will be bigger in the third movie. That’s why you can basically forget this movie.
But apparently both these movies have made a lot of money which leaves me to wonder if people actually went to them or is it a bizarro version of Hollywood accounting so this doesn’t become another one of those movie franchises that is scrapped because it underperformed.
Yes the animantronics look great. But there’s only so much it can be stretched over an hour and a half.
