‘Coyotes’ Lacks Bite

Coyotes is one of those movies you watch and doesn’t really leave anything with you that you forget you watched it days later. It’s directed by Colin Minihan, who made the horrible What Keeps You Alive and this one also features his wife, Brittany Allen, as an escort. But the movie is a typical “When Nature Attacks” movie that feels like there was a great concept but no one really knew what to do with it. At an hour and a half, it’s quite a stretch for a movie.

Set in the Hollywood Hills, it focuses on a family that is terrorized by coyotes as a thunderstorm rages outside. But since there is a small cast, you know there’s not going to be much violence and you can tell which characters die and which live.

Both Justin Long and Kate Bosworth seem wasted in the obligatory married couple that is on the rocks that always in these movies. Jesus Christ, can’t writers come up with something different? Cujo came out over 40 years ago and it seems the concept of a family struggling with problems that will bring them together following some major trauma has grown tired. At least the filmmakers of Cujo used the threat of the rabid dog as some form of atonement for Dee Wallace’s character who was having an affair.

There was no way to do a movie about coyotes without CGI and at least it looks a lot better than the werewolves in An American Werewolf in Paris. But it’s still not that impressive. Also, when you find out why the coyotes are terrorizing the family, you’ll probably roll your eyes because it’s been done in other movies.

And done better.

For someone who lives out in the countryside and hears coyotes howling almost every night, I give the filmmakers try to make the coyotes out that they’re not evil like the shark in Jaws. Three writers are credited to this movie and this was the best they could come up with.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
