While The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie has only made about $9 million, the positive reviews and word of mouth has breathed new life in the long-delayed Coyote vs. Acme.
The live-action/animated movie has been in limbo for years with some reports that Warner Bros. Discovery was going to scrap it totally like Batgirl and Scoob! Haunted Haunt to take a tax write-off meaning the movies have to be destroyed.
Ketchup Entertainment, an independent movie distributor, which has handled the distribution for The Day the Earth Blew Up is in talks to purchase Coyote vs. Acme at a reported $50 million. While I think this is a sleazy way for David Zaslav to make more money, it’s very likely Ketchup may have the last laugh.
The buzz on the movie over the years has caused a lot of interest. And while some other recently movies like the live-action Snow White and Mickey 17 seem to be big budget bombs, maybe people just want to see an old-fashioned movie that doesn’t have a high budget. I haven’t seen The Day the Earth Blew Up yet but my friends have and they are raving about it.
Maybe we’re hitting the moment where studios are going back to releasing smaller movies rather than major blockbusters. Coyote vs. Acme is co-written by James Gunn and features John Cena and Will Forte, among others. The premise involves Forte as a lawyer representing Wile E. Coyote in a lawsuit against Acme Corporation.
Even if the the deal goes through, reports indicate it could be 2026 before Coyote has its day in court. Well, fingers are crossed.
