Remembering The Crichton Leprechaun

On my recent trip through Mobile, Ala., I witnessed a parade of floats passing through downtown as they apparently was on the way to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. But the one thing I didn’t see was the Crichton Leprechaun.

Back in 2006, the Crichton neighborhood of the coastal city became one of the first viral sensations of the 2000s as the people of the community all claimed there was a leprechaun in the area. It was an actual news broadcast even though it seemed like something out of The Onion or The Daily Show.

The YouTube link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1ljOcl39PQ

It’s strange what will bring a community together as most of the people being interviewed have an enthusiastic feel to them. And we’re even see a professional leprechaun hunter getting ready. But while leprechauns are considered another made-up creature of folklore and mythology like goblins, fairies and trolls, I believe one woman interviewed has a better explanation.

Her opinion is “It could’ve been a crackhead that got hold of the wrong stuff.” She thinks it’s someone who is high off the drug and pretending to be a leprechaun hanging around in the trees.

Well, she could be right. I’d think I’d believe someone doing drugs and pretending to be something they’re not rather than a leprechaun.

What do you think? Please comment.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
