‘Elevation’ A Very, Very Heavy Burtation

I’m really getting sick and tired of movies like Elevation that really don’t offer anything except a handful of people wearing dark, dingy clothes in a bunch of poorly lit scenes as they go from Point A to Point B in a post-apocalyptic world.

The lack of much of a cast is intentional on account of the movie’s budget but there’s also a lack of the alien creatures that have invaded Earth. Yet for some reason, they can’t live above 8,000 feet. So much of the movie is set in the Rocky Mountains. Yet, you wonder wouldn’t more people have made the trek to a higher elevation.

These creatures called “Reapers” apparently have a bullet-proof bodies and I guess there immune to fire, dangerous acid, RPGs, bazooka blasts and even an entire tank division of the military. A movie like this is so foolish that it thinks it’s being thought-provoking.

Anyway, Will (Anthony Mackie) lives in a refuge in the Rockies but has to travel below 8,000 feet to get his son, Hunter (Danny Boyd Jr.), some medicine for his lung disease. With him is Nina (Morena Baccarin), the tough-as-nails woman with a mysterious past who has been working on bullets to kill the Reapers. And there’s Kate (Maddie Hasson) who is a friend of Will’s but her and Nina fight so much, you can pretty much guess who is going to still be alive when the credits start to roll.

The rest of the movie is a boring schlock as they go from from the Front Range, Colo. area down to Boulder barely running into Reapers just in dark places to help save on special effects. This is basically a rip-off of A Quiet Place which was problematic at times but at least John Krasinski got an A for effort.

I kept waiting for something good to happen, something that looked amazing. Instead, it’s just like being stuck in the backseat of a 90-minute drive with two adults arguing for most of the way.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
