Just before Christmas weekend in 1994, viewers turned into The Days of Our Lives to watch their “stories” only to discover Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) would actually be possessed by the Devil.
What a festive way to begin the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ!
And I know some people can say that Christmas is actually derived from other religions and celebrations such as the Winter Solstice and Saturnalia. But yet, it brought up an interesting point that Christians tend to ignore – they are totally obsessed with Lucifer, the Devil and evil spirits they talk about them all the time.
So why not have Marlena spend the holidays possessed by evil forces? And even though it was called the dumbest plotline in daytime drama history, it set the stage for NBC’s 1999 premiere of Passions, another daytime drama that ran for nine seasons and dealt with supernatural elements and evil spirits. I never watched either show but I caught a few snippets of Passions and it made Marlena look like The Exorcist in comparison.
