No Reason Whatsoever To Care For ‘It’s What’s Inside’

After Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and Talk to Me, I don’t think I will care ever to see another horror/thriller movie where a bunch of 20-somethings gather for a lavish party here or there. It’s What’s Inside is another movie of loud-mouth obnoxious 20-somethings who never, never seem like they would exist in the real world or even get along enough to be friends.

One of my writing professors, Peter Christopher, once said that you can tell bad writing if the characters are constantly referring to each other by their names. He used the example of “John, you’re here.” It’s What’s Inside is a good 100 minutes of this line repeated over and over in some form or another.

From the first scene where Shelby (Brittany O’Grady) and the obnoxious Cyrus (James Morosini) argue over having sex or not, I was hoping for something more. Instead, their friends are even worse. And I’m not even going to say much more. One of their friends, Forbes (David Thompson), shows up with a suitcase that contains a machine he and his company in Silicon Valley have been working on. It allows people to switch bodies.

There’s a number of ways this could be made into a good concept. Instead, what we get is a lot of people arguing and fooling around with each other to where they have sex and one of the couples dies in a cartoonish way. Then, they spend the second half arguing over what to do because they’re in other bodies.

If you’re confused about who is who, so is everyone else. There’s also a twist at the end involving Forbes’ sister, Beatrice (Madison Davenport), that anyone could probably have guessed it. But what really is this supposed to be, a horror-comedy, or a sci-fi thriller? Greg Jardin, wrote, directed and edited this movie in a herky-jerky style that could’ve been great if the plot was better than it’s premise.

Maybe Jardin needs to look at movies like Big or Being John Malkovich and realize what made them so good and memorable. A good idea doesn’t always equal a good movie.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
