‘Malum’ Is Dumb

In one of his best stand-up routines, Eddie Murphy in Delirious discussed the problems with The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist. He also said white people always stay in haunted buildings, but black people would leave the minute they heard a scary voice. This inspired Jordan Peele to title his first movie as writer and director Get Out.

It’s probably because Jessica Sula’s Jessica Loren is half-white that maybe why she hangs around a decommissioned empty police station so long. She even lets a wild pig in the building. Jessica is the daughter of Capt. Will Loren (Eric Olson). who went nuts about a year earlier or so, and murdered other police officers. Loren reportedly was suffering from extreme guilt over his failure to save women part of a cult led by John Malum (Chaney Morrow).

First and foremost, no police department in a major city would leave a rookie alone at night to watch a police station. Also, a good officer would be smart enough to leave the building the minute anything odd seemed to happen. She doesn’t leave the building for the same reason Audrey Hepburn’s character didn’t lock her door in Wait Under Dark or why a lot of characters do stupid things they wouldn’t do in real life because the movie would be over in 10-15 minutes.

There’s also a stupid twist that doesn’t make sense as well as a boring performance by Morrow as the cult leader. Anthony DiBlasi who wrote and directed, basically did a remake of his 2014 movie Last Shift. I haven’t seen it, but after watching this, I really don’t want to. And neither will you.

And that’s all I got to say about this movie.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
