‘The Nun II’ Doesn’t Have A Prayer

The Nun II made over a quarter of a billion dollars at the box office worldwide. I’m almost wondering if there was a popular trailer showing at the beginning that wasn’t available onine that people went to see and then left. It’s reported people did the same thing for Scary Movie 2 when it had a trailer for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

I can’t imagine anyone sitting through the nearly two hours that is this movie that makes a sermon by Reverend Lovejoy seem like a livestock auctioneer who’s just snorted cocaine and drank a gallon of Red Bull. There’s a plot to this movie but it’s not really fascinating nor logical that it would put so many people in seats. I sat through the movie but since it’s mostly filmed in dark scenes, I couldn’t tell what was going on.

When the Demon Nun Valek (Bonnie Aarons) appeared briefling in the second Conjuring movie, she was creepy. It was framed and filmed in a way that was creepy. Even in the first Nun movie, she was lurking in the shadows. But here she is shown so much, her appearrance doesn’t work anymore. There’s a reason Jaws is very scary and Jaws: The Revenge is laughable.

Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) returns for this movie looking like she’s barely old enough to be in high school, nonetheless a nunnery. Anyway, Valek wasn’t destroyed at the end of the first movie and is back to killing priests again all over the world. Except this time, Irene has gotten a friend, Sister Debra (Storm Reid), to help her.

But if you’ve seen one of these movies, you’ve seen them all. Farmiga is a delight to watch even though she should probably move away from these types of movies. Not that I’m criticizing horror movies but franchise movies in general are becoming out of hand. Following the lackluster third Conjuring movie, maybe they should quit while they’re ahead rather than milking it for all its worth.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
