Herschel Walker pulling out a sheriff’s badge at the Georgia Senatorial Debate on Oct. 14. It’s an honorary badge issued from the Johnson County, Ga. Sheriff’s Office. He got in trouble from the moderator who called it a prop, but for Walker, it didn’t register what she meant. Walker is not the smartest person in the world.
Sadly, he’s turned into a minstrel show for the Republican Party. He’s the Stepin Fetchit for them. He comes out and does his routine and Republicans applaud him for it but the rest of us are shaking our heads. It looks funny on the surface but it’s not. It just goes to show that the Republican Party is willing to exploit black people anyway it’ll help them.
Now, I will admit the Democrat Party has exploited black people as well. But they haven’t done it as bad as Republicans. Also, given his behavior, I can’t see one single black person of voting age in Georgia from Augusta to Valdosta, Columbus to Savannah choosing him. He really looks like someone who has no idea what the job entails. If anything else, he is just upholding the stereotypes people have been trying to stop since the real Stepin Fetchit started it 100 years ago.
There’s no way to say it without sounding like a racist, but his whole demeanor seems to be that of the House Negro that Malcolm X once described. I lived 24 years in Georgia. They booted Roy Barnes out of the governor’s office because they were upset over the change of the state flag that took out the “Stars and Bars” section. When my friends graduated from the University of Georgia in the spring of 2001, people protested because Barnes was the speaker. When they had a ceremony in 2002 in Americus, Ga., where Barnes was in attendance, they protested waving the racist flag around.
By no means are the people of Georgia supporting Walker other than the fact that it’s a chance to “own the libs” and take back the Senate. Many of them are hard-core racists and they have used the “N-word” and other derogatory remarks against him and probably still do. The sad fact is if that’s the case racists will still support him, then a lot of people in Georgia will be affected by the GOP’s agenda. There are sections of Georgia that look worse than third-world countries. You will not believe how bad it is. Deliverance may have been filmed over 50 years ago, but some people would think it looks a lot worse in some areas.
So, he pulls out some badge and he waves it around. Johnson County is in the southeast central part of the state. The sheriff says he has no problem with Walker flashing around in a debate and why should he. It gives him some attention. Sadly, it makes Walker and other black people look ignorant. I think Walker is confused between an honorary deputy and a reserve deputy. Either way, it doesn’t make law enforcement look any better given Walker’s history of domestic abuse allegations.
To the best of my knowledge, honorary and/or reserve deputies/officers are really supposed to do nothing more than direct traffic during major emergencies or be present at community events such as a July 4 parade or celebration and a Christmas parade. In 2015, a Tulsa County reserve deputy Robert Bates, who got the position because of a big campaign donation reportedly, was convicted in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man, Eric Harris, when he mistook his service firearm for a stun gun. He was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter.
I sure hope Walker is not showing up at locations with a loaded firearm and flashing his badge around saying he’s in law enforcement. I can guarentee you if this were the case, the county leaders would demand his badges be turned in. An honorary deputy badge is the same as an honorary degree from a university. Honorary pretty much means something you’re given as a token of appreciation. We criticized President George W. Bush for putting Michael Brown in charge of FEMA because he screwed up following Hurricane Katrina. It was supposed to be an honorary position.
Republicans really need to stop this minstrel show. Hopefully conservatives will show some common sense and vote for incumbent Raphael Warnock or at least Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver. Walker is just a black version of Donald Trump.
What do you think? Please comment.
Hershel walker is an embarrassment to black people everywhere. He is the “stepin fechit” from times gone by. It’s unfortunate that this guy would be a role model for anything.
