I normally don’t eat at McDonald’s anymore. It’s not because I don’t like a good quarter pounder, it’s just that their prices have skyrocketed and they don’t offer many deals as other fast food places do. If I do get anything, it’s usually something off the value menu.
I was going to try the Big Arch when I saw it advertised but after McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski acting like he had never eaten a burger in his life before as he looked at it the same way we do when that one relative wants to experiment for Thanksgiving dinner and we have to act like we’re fascinated by the fact she put quacomole in the mashed potatoes.
I ordered it from the McDonald’s in Tahlequah, Okla., near my pharmacy at around 2:30 p.m. on a Friday and still had to wait as other people behind me received their orders. This led me to conclude it’s not a very popular item at this place. And at $7.99 plus taxes, I seriously doubt people are wanting to spend as much on a burger alone especially from a place like McDonald’s.
It looks nice because presentation is everything. But I remember the Arch Deluxe and the fiasco that was. Let me just say, McDonald’s isn’t supposed to be eaten on a plate. This is one messy burger. Some people like messy burgers but even trying to take a bite meant part of the burger would slip out. So, I can’t really fault Chris K. for taking a small bite, because it is quite big.
But it’s mostly just a glorified Big Mac/Double Quarter Pounder hybrid with a different bun and a little extra spice to the sauce. The crispy onions will end up more on the plate or the ground. The biggest problem is putting this in a box. A wrapper would make more of a good item because it would catch most of the good that falls out.
So, you’ll need a lot of napkins and I do mean a lot of napkins more than what the normal drive-thru workers will give you. Ergo, if you choose to eat this in your car, be sure to have a roll of power towels handy as well as a lot of hand sanitizer.
Unfortunately, the viral video of Chris K. and his smarmy condescending response to the feedback will probably signal the end of this “Limited Time” item. And at $8 in BFE Oklahoma, I seriously doubt many people will be ordering them on a regular basis especially since McDonald’s gives you a receipt to take a survey for a BOGO item within 30 days.
My guess is this burger will be phased out over the next few months. It reportedly has a caloric value of 1,000 give or take and that’s a lot. Also, Wendy’s and Burger King have already mocked Chris K. on his video which should’ve never ever been released. Who the hell is their director of communications? If they need a new one, I might submit my resume.
Both the Bacon King at BK and the Baconator at Wendy’s have proved to me more successful and offer more bang for their buck. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good burger but only on special occassions.
