I’ve never seen the movie God’s Not Dead nor any of the sequels. But I know that the gist of the first movie is an atheist philosophy professor played by Kevin Sorbo who demands his students sign a declaration that “God is dead” or else they won’t pass.
Yeah. No way would this movie work in real life. The professor would’ve been shitcanned a long time before the events in the movie. The same thing is for J.K. Simmons’ character in Whiplash. No way would a music professor at a conservatory be allowed to be that tyrannical for years without it being brought to someone’s attention already.
I mean tuition does pay the professors’ salaries even though most of it seems to go to athletics and other areas nowadays.
At the University of Oklahoma, a real-life God’s Not Dead situation has been started. But it’s a switcheroo started by Samantha Fulnecky, who is a junior or third-year student. She’s claims she’s being discriminated against because of her religious beliefs because she referenced the Bible in a psychology class assignment. The class was tasked with reading an article on how people are perceived on social expectations based on their gender. Students needed to write their opinion on the essay giving proper citation.
Fulnecky instead turned in a basic pedestrian response citing her beliefs. She didn’t even cite one scripture from the Bible. Instead she used the phrase “The Bible says.” She received a 0 out of 25 from her instructor, Mel Curth. The 650-word essay was also reviewed by another instructor who concurred with Curth’s decision. Just to note in the response, Curth indicates the grade isn’t based on Fulnecky’s religious beliefs but rather on how she didn’t mention any citations to back up her statements.
It should be noted that Curth is a transgender woman and Fulnecky made a comment that transgender people are “demonic.” This alone would have resulting in a failing grade. If a person had called people of color racial slurs or derogatory words, this also would have been slammed by the instructor.
This leads me to the focus of this post – Fulnecky must’ve had this planned. If Fulnecky is so opposed to transgender people, why did she choose a course instructed by one? I don’t mean to be offensive but people can tell Curth is transgender not that there’s anything wrong with that. Even if Fulnecky intended to take a psychology class and they switched the instructor at the last minute, she still could have dropped this course.
This assignment was turned in during November, way into the Fall Semester. I believe Fulnecky took this course with an objective – to show how “biased” colleges are to Christianity and how they push the LBGTQIA agenda. Why would a college student be taking an Intro to Psychology class during their third year? By this time, they’ve knocked out all the core curriculum requirements and working on their major. Ok, so maybe it’s an elective. But something doesn’t seem right.
And that may be because Fulnecky is the daughter of Kristi Fulnecky, an attorney for the Springfield, Mo. community who also has served as a member of their City Council. She’s also had a long history of legal disputes and actions. She’s legally defended some rioters at the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection coup attempt and filed lawsuits during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic over. There are also accusations she threatened the police chief of Springfield over social media and has threatened people in pending litigation.
You don’t have to be Hercule Poirot or Benoit Blanc to deduce there’s too much circumstantial evidence for this to be a coincidence. Hell, even Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector could see there’s something going on here that tastes like a Moon Pie that’s been set out in the hot summer sun too long.
Fulnecky has become a celebrity with the right-wing media. People are comparing her to Riley Gaines, the former collegiate swimmer who tied for fifth against Lia Thomas, a transgender woman, at the NCAA championship in March 2022. Since then, she’s become a huge anti-transgender in sports advocate. I mean, it’s not like she came in second or even third. She tied for fifth. That means, there were four other better swimmers than her.
Make it make sense because they’ve been criticizing participation trophies for decades. Yet, they feel when they’re tied for fifth, they deserve to be hoisted up on a pedestal. Or when they fail an assignment based on their own inabilities to write a college-level essay, it’s discrimination. Again, Fulnecky is not a first-year student. She’s been in college and still doesn’t know how to write a paper properly. That’s not discrimination.
But never let facts come in between how conservatives and right-wing media like to twist things. Fulnecky has contacted the Turning Point chapter at OU who have stood behind her, naturally, as well as Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who for once has remained mostly quiet. In a dick move, OU has put Murth on administration leave pending the outcome of Fulnecky’s discrimination complaint, and released a canned response that they respect all religious beliefs.
Student at OU have said they will plan a support rally for Curth who has a 4.2 out of 5 rating on Rank My Professor. But anyone who has read the essay will note how bad it is. I hate to use another pop culture reference but there was an episode of Boy Meets World where Shawn (Rider Strong) pretends to be a college student in a philosophy, but he’s still in high school. He gets praise and attention from his professor for his oral discussions during class. Yet, when he turns in a paper, he gets a failing grade.
Later when Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) looks at the three-page paper, he comments that it was written as one-whole sentence. I wrote many papers and essays in college. I also rewrote many papers and essays in college. It takes more than spell-check to proof-read a paper. I know it sounds funny, but I often would read my papers out loud to see how they sounded. If it didn’t make sense being spoken, then it wouldn’t make any sense being read.
It feels like Fulneck wrote this essay as a fluff piece to meet the word limit requirements. Here is the essay in its entirety in the link below:
