I’m not going to have any sympathy for someone like Dick Cheney. He lived a long life at 84 while cutting many other lives short for his own capital gain.
Yes, yes, yes. He turned around over a year ago and said he would support Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential election. Just because Frankenstein created a monster that got out of control and regretted it, he still deserves the blame. And he only did it when the Republican Party turned on his own daughter, Liz. It’s not fun when it happens to you, is it, Dick?
And what an appropriate name for this guy. Cheney helped lay the framework with several other Republicans to get where we are today. From his early days as Deputy Chief of Staff and then Chief of Staff under Presidential Gerald Ford, it seemed more important to pull the strings. The conservative movement in the post-Nixon are led to major changes under that sumbitch Reagan.
And it’s no surprise he would run for the House of Representatives in Wyoming where there’s only one seat. He didn’t want another rep screwing up his work. He was a sneaky asshole who played the system for all its worth. He was able to get deferrments to get out of military service during the Vietnam War. This is ironic because he ended up becoming the Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush.
Yet, everyone jumped on Bill Clinton and Barack Obama because they never served. The concept was simple – never accept blame for anything, especially if you are totally responsible. Sound familiar?
The elder Bush wasn’t a saint but he wasn’t stupid. He knew prolonging the Persian Gulf War was dangerous not just politically but also for the lives of the military. The horrible part is we ended up going to war over a decade later on lies that in a better and more fair society would’ve resulted in Cheney dying in prison not living for 15 years after getting a heart transplant.
And let’s face it, do you think a 71-year-old man with Cheney’s poor health choice would’ve gotten that transplant if he wasn’t very rich and very powerful? You have to wonder about poor soul that didn’t get that heart transplant and what happened to them.
The Iraqi War and Afghanistan War lasted for many years as Cheney’s connection to Haliburton got no bid contracts so he could get richer. And now we have our current administration getting rich while telling people to suck it up. Cheney even told the voters to “get over” the fact that Al Gore probably did win the 2000 election. I mean, let’s face it, Katherine Harris was working for the Bush/Cheney campaign while serving as Secretary of State of Florida, meaning she got to certified the election results. Or shall I say, the election results she wanted to certify.
Imagine if Gore, Clinton or Obama had the same campaign workers with a conflict of interest. Cheney knew by being the running mate of George W. Bush, he could swing the pendulum more on name recognition. It wasn’t about getting the younger Bush elected, it was about getting him elected so he could work the system more.
After the elder Bush lost in 1992, many Republicans couldn’t grapple with the fact that Americans were tired of him. Yes, he was a very qualified Presidential candidate on paper. But we had already seen his domestic policy and it sucked. Twelve years of an administration is too long to operate just on ultimate control alone.
And from there it all began. They had no agenda but control and to point the finger at the other side and blame them for everything. With a government shut down with the Republicans having a majority in the House and the Senate as well as the White House and the Supreme Court, only a damned fool would believe it’s someone else’s fault. But Cheney and his cohorts spent decades making those damned fools.
The man doesn’t deserve any sympathies or condolences. Cheney along with Donald Rumsfield, Rush Limbaugh, Charlie Kirk, Henry Kissinger and so many others worked the hardest to get a system where their side could never lose. Cheney helped turned the American public against itself as well as others.
Yes, I do think people can change for the better and atone for their sins. It doesn’t erase the facts that others sufferted because of their actions. George Wallace may It’s like in the Cheney biopic Vice where he says he’s saying for getting a DUI for a second or third time and his wife says he can’t just apologize and keep doing the same thing over again.
Cheney, like so many people, wanted money, power and as much absolute control as possible. I’m sure the last few years of his life he was in a lot of pain and suffering. You don’t get a mulligan just because you were ill.
We may not get over the consequences of the last 25 years, but we will get over any sympathy.
