I want to extend my congratulations to Maria Corina Machado for being named the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. I know a lot of people (who don’t understand the concept of peace) think it should’ve went to another person.
But this person has never been a model for peace. When five young black men were falsely accused of sexually assaulting a jogger in Central Park in 1989, this man took out full page ads arguing they needed to be sentenced to death. When the remnants of the World Trade Center was still smoldering as families wondered if their love ones were still alive, he bragged about now having the tallest building in New York City.
He’s been accused of sexually assaulting several women himself with more evidence to suggest he is guilty. He pardoned people who were responsible for the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, some of which have gone on to commit more horrible acts of violence. He demanded that protestors and naysayers at his political rallies be violently moved from the buildings.
This man has never advocated peace. He told police department to double down on the police brutality. He celebrates the violence that ICE agent commit against regular citizens of America. He doesn’t like anyone who isn’t white or rich. He views women as inferior when if they are white. He believes all political opponents and the media who talk unfavorably of him should be thrown in prison indefinitely.
This is not a man who wants peace. This is a man who wants power and control. There’s a big difference. Machado is the former member of the National Assembly in Venezuela. She has been an opposition leader against authoritarians Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro. She is an advocate for human rights all around the world and has to go in hiding out of fear of violent actions against herself and her family.
But our current President is mad because someone makes a joke about him. My government teacher in high school said past Peace Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. knew he would face death for his actions. People who want peace are brave enough to risk their own securities so others will be better off.
That’s not who our President is. He has sided with the wrong people in the wars between Russia and Ukraine and Israel and Palestine. His ideology is that people should just give up to appease others. He’s the type of person who would’ve said James Meredith should’ve never attended the University of Mississippi and given up causing trouble when the riots happened in 1962.
At the same time, he is saying that the same people in this country who don’t agree with are the enemies. This isn’t peace. It’s authoritarian. And for the Nobel committee to award it nullifies the importance of all previous winners.
My belief is that he knows his time is limited. His rants and ravings show just how unhinged he has become. And even though they don’t want to do it, this government will have to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. He wants this to be his legacy and he’s convinced others that he deserves it.
This is funny because these people have talked for years about participation trophies. But this is his participation trophy. Just because you talk about ending wars that didn’t ever happen, doesn’t mean you get credit for them.
