I may not be a very religious person, but I feel that everyone should be able to go to a place of worship and feel safe. If there’s one place on this planet where violence or even bad thoughts are not welcome it should be churches, synagogues, temples and mosques.
Sadly, we’ve seen too much of this in the past 10 years. And it’s happened once again. Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, was killed by law enforcement after he reportedly rammed a pick-up truck into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in the Grand Blanc Township just outside of Flint, Mich. Four people are reported to have been killed as of this posting and eight are injured.
Authorities report that Sanford drove his truck, which had two American flags on it into the main entrance of the Mormon church building and opened fire. He then set the building on fire. Sanford was reportedly an Army veteran and didn’t have a prior criminal history.
Despite what some people may think of the Mormon church, we have religious freedom in this country and as long as it’s not intentionally hurting others, it should be allowed. A lot of religions have problems with their dogma but still that should come from changes within, not by the anger of and hatred of people. It’s been reported that children were shielded by adults from the violence. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Any body who puts their own health and life in danger to save the life of another person is far braver than any of these psychopaths will ever understand. I hate that at a time when we should be more united, the Internet is filled with a lot of people trying to divide us. People claiming to be part of ICE physically are arresting people by shoving older men and women to the ground while they aim firearms at bystanders. And it’s foolish our government thinks military needs to be sent to cities that have a Democrat-majority to intimidate people.
I also have family in Michigan as people on my father’s side of the family moved to the Detroit area following World War II. But we shouldn’t just care because we have family and friends in a certain area. We should care because they were regular people like us who are going through the worst time of their lives.
