No Empathy Allowed

Let m start by saying, I don’t condone gun violence. Yes, I own firearms. But I don’t walk around all the time showing off my guns, nor do I think it’s always the answer to everything. Yes, you should call 911 and use guns as a last line of defense.

Charlie Kirk died on Sept. 10 from a gunshot wound while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk was a founder of Turning Point USA, a very conservative far-right organization. At the time of the shooting, he was discussing gun violence with a student.

Kirk had famously said that as a supporter of the Second Amendment, a few people being killed a year is necessary. In 2023 when Kirk said, this, about 46,700 Americans died of gun-related violence with almost 18,000 being the result of homicides. He also spread false information about Covid-19 and about how the 2020 Presidential election was rigged. He also denied an insurrection happened on Jan. 6, 2021.

Yes, he’s dead, but he wasn’t a good person, even saying that he didn’t like empathy. For a man who could look at the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School or Robb Elementary School and saw their murders were important for the preservation of the Second Amendment is something that lacks empathy. Children should be allowed to go to school without fear of being shot. And political figures, even if you disagree with them 100 percent, should be allowed to speak in public without being shot in the neck, which is what happened to Kirk.

And all these people posting a meme that Kirk had a wife and children and people shouldn’t be mocking his death, well, he said empathy is a made-up term. All members of gun violence have families and friends. It hurts and it’s horrible so many people can’t see the hypocrisy and irony. The families of the Sandy Hook victims were called “crisis actors” and harassed aggressively for years.

Needless to say, it’s always the religious people who are saying we should pray for the Kirk family. The Presidency wants half flown at half-mast. Yet, there Melissa Hortman, a Minnesota Democrat legislator, was killed over the summer. Nothing much was said.

There also was a school shooting in Evergreen, Colo. where four people were reportedly injured on Sept. 10 that didn’t get near the media attention. Maybe because it’s become so random in America. But at least Kirk can be happy that we’re still upholding the Second Amendment.

I didn’t agree with Kirk’s beliefs and politics and normally that doesn’t matter about their well-being. But time and time again, Kirk and others exposed racist, misogynistic and prejudiced. So, I don’t have any empathy for him now that he’s gone.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
