Every now and again, we all seem to work a job where we’re the only one on staff making it impossible to even take a restroom break for a few minutes.
A few weeks ago, Nykia Hamilton, 25, went viral when a video of her working all by herself at a Burger King in Columbia, S.C. It just shows you messed up the American workforce has become. Hamilton, a single mother of three kids, was all by herself working at a fast-food restaurant. I’ve gone into BK places and only see a few people on staff. The same has been the case with Dollar General stores were only one person is working.
Hamilton became popular as she said the long hours she works takes times away from with her children. This happens to a lot of people and worse people who don’t have kids are always expected to pick up the slack when someone leaves to go see a recital or wants the holidays. To be honest, if a child is sick, a parent should be able to take time off. To go see some kid sit with their legs-crossed with hundreds of other kids and clap their hands isn’t the reason to take half a day off work.
Hamilton said she started a GoFundMe to help after the video went viral. Another video indicates that Hamilton got fired – for tardiness. She worked 12 hours one day by herself, but she was tardy one day and she lost her job. I’m also guessing this Burger King location is a franchise which means it’s not the corporate bringing the hammer down.

When we live in a world where Congress members take a recess so they don’t have to do their jobs (and still get paid) and the President spends his time playing golf (with caddies helping him cheat) and talking on social media, this is another sign of late-stage capitalism.
Yes, I’m sure there’s more to this story than we know. Since it’s a personnel matter, management doesn’t have to say anything to anyone. It’s just a reminder that as an employee, you’re always replaceable. Yet, your own kids aren’t.
Hamilton deserves to spend as much time with her kids as they grow up as any other working parent.
