I wasn’t able to make it to the event because I live about 800 miles away now. But recently, an American Beech Tree was planted at the New Echota Historic Site near Calhoun, Ga.
The site used to be the capital of the Cherokee Nation prior to the removal of Native Indigenous People during the Trail of Tears. As chance would have it, I currently live near Tahlequah, the current capital of the Cherokee Nation.
My mother, Linda Fletcher, worked and volunteered years as a Board member of the Friends of New Echota. She passed away in late December. We’re also Cherokee on her side of the family.
Present was my brother, cousins, aunts and uncles.
If you are in the northwestern Georgia area, I would recommend you stop by.
