Fort Gibson Lake located near where I live has rose over 25 feet over the pool elevation of 554 feet according to reports from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
The top of the flood is 582 feet and that’s only 11 feet from reaching the top of the Fort Gibson Dam. However, I don’t think it will reach that level as no significant amount of rain is in the forecast for another week.
Thankfully, it hasn’t gotten as bad here as Interstate 40 near the Tennessee/North Carolina border. But I have heard stories from people back in the 1980s and 1990s where the lake rose very high.
Right after college, I worked and lived in Americus, Ga., which had suffered significant flooding during the summer of 1994 when the Flint River rose over 43 feet which is 23 feet above flood stage. Over 5,000 homes and businesses were destroyed and 18,000 families were evacuated.
