I went out the other day to check the mail and this turtle had walked up on my porch from the ramp but apparently didn’t know how to get back down on the ground.
So, I picked it up and took it back down to the ground and let it go. Please don’t pick up turtles from the wild to keep in captivity. They can be carriers of salmonella as well as difficult to raise. I’m a strong advocate of Adopt, Don’t Shop but if you want turtles get them from a legitimate pet shop.
These turtles in the wild may have developed their own habitat somewhere and they’re just foraging. I had a basset hound I named Alf when I was growing up and once summer as she got older, we began feeding her canned dog food. Later as she went to bed, a turtle would come up and eat the remnants of dog food off the tin plate.
