Five years ago today, George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, who compressed his neck causing him to go into cardiopulmonary arrest.
Floyd’s crime? He allegedly used a counterfeit $20. We don’t know if Floyd knew it was counterfeit. It might have been given to him as change from a previous transaction. Regardless, he wasn’t doing anything that constituted four police officers to flank him to make sure he wouldn’t get away.
Well, he was black. When I was working in Americus, Ga., an employee of the Habitat for Humanity organization was caught making counterfeit. But he didn’t die. Oh, he was white.
Need I say more?
Floyd’s murder, which was recorded on the cell phone of local resident Darnella Frazier ignited a firestorm and heavy debates between whether Floyd “should’ve complied” or if he was unfairly and illegally targeted because of his skin color. Protests broke out in the aftermath all around the country with some people saying white supremacy groups were actually the ones doing the property damage.
This happened three months into the Covid-19 pandemic and our leaders at the time couldn’t care at all. And as that jerk was somehow allowed to even run again, nonetheless get elected, he has shown himself even more to be an ineffective leader. All he cares about is the grift.
Sadly, Floyd’s death is still heavily debated now, especially three years and one day after the Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde, Texas where police stood around on their phones while young children were murdered. What really is the purpose of law enforcement in our society anyway?
As ICE agents continue to harass and detain anyone they choose to, it’s incorrect to refer to them as “peace officers” from now on.
