Visit Fort Gibson Dam

The Fort Gibson Dam is located on the borders of Cherokee and Wagoner Counties in northeastern Oklahoma. It was ordered constructed by the Flood Control Act of 1941. However, construction was delayed during World War II.

It’s a gravity dam on the Grand (Neosho) River and the project was completed in 1953. The dam supplies hydroelectric power and drinking water to neighboring communities. It’s located about nine miles north of the town of Fort Gibson.

The site is popular for fishing and was actually used as a double for the 1987 low-budget horror movie Terror at Tenkiller. The actual Tenkiller Ferry Lake is actually located about southeast of the lake in Cherokee County. (Just FYI, the movie is currently streaming on Tubi along with a RiffTrax edition so that should tell you the quality of the movie.)

There is an overlook of the dam on the Wagoner County side of the dam. On a recent trip, it looks like they’re repaving the asphalt on Oklahoma Highway 251A which runs over the dam.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
