Unity Is Earned, Not Given Or Expected

For all the people defending Donald Trump saying this country needs “unity,” I want you to tell me what did you offer in the last four years?

We never hear of the U-word when there is a Democrat in the Oval Office. No, all we hear about is division. When Bill Clinton became President, the Republican Party decided to make it their goal to have him removed from office. Yet, following 9/11, we said we should unite behind George W. Bush because “he kept us safe” after the attacks. Yet, I distinctly remember the former Commander-in-Chief saying, “You’re either with us or against us.” In other words, he was saying, “My way or the highway.”

And it’s been that “Put up and shut up” mentality that conservatives have been saying for the past 50-60 years. It was their entire rhetoric with “Love it or leave it” and “If you don’t like America, then get out!” It’s the same old story where people are allowed to criticize, complain and even attempt to overthrow violently whenever they don’t like the outcome of the election. There are still so many people still pissed that Barack Obama was elected twice, especially the current POTUS.

As of this posting, we’re already about 36ish hours into the second Trump Presidency and he has decided that the violent seditious offenders like Stewart Rhodes and Enrique Tarrio deserve to be pardoned. This doesn’t create unity but it creates more division. Trump obviously did it because he wants to have his own private militia of angry violent men who will do his bidding. But it’s an insult to all the “Back the Blue” law enforcement and judicial people.

It’s also going to create a belief that they can get away with violent actions without consequences. This is going to cause some bloodshed I fear. But it will happen off federal land where the government will have no authority over the states. Yet, it still could’ve been prevented. I could understand Trump pardoning the non-violent offenders. But what he did was one big “Fuck You!” to everyone.

Trump’s speech was basically a criticism of all Americans who refuse to bend the knee and kiss the ring. I wouldn’t kiss his ass for all the money in the world. I have something more important than money – integrity. Respect and admiration is something that is earned and it’s very valuable and priceless. It can be taken away as quick as it’s given.

That being said, I can understand why Carrie Underwood sang “America the Beautiful.” Her popularity is waning. I mean, she’s been eclipsed by Taylor Swift and not as young as Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan. And as the music cut out while she was performing, a perfect metaphor for America right now, she sang a capella. Yet, when Beyonce is criticized when she sang for Obama. And of course, Underwood said there should be unity.

Oh, yes, that word again. I mean, Underwood’s from Oklahoma and just an Okie from Muskogee, so I can understand if she has conservative views. But she also deserves the criticism she will get. You don’t put yourself out as a performing artist anywhere if you’re singing at a state fair or Presidential inauguration without willing to take some criticism.

And it’s ironic she performed for a man who can never take any criticism. Hell, most of his supporters can’t either. Trump reminds me of that idiom of “My child is the only one marching in step.” It’s also no surprise that Trump is a Baby Boomer who have adopted the ideology of “I’m always right; you’re always wrong.” George Carlin hit the bullseye when he said Boomers had the same philosophy of “Gimme that! It’s mine!”

He was obviously talking of Trump and other Boomers. That might be why Boomers and older Gen Xers, who might as well be Boomers Juniors, feel they deserve everything they’ve gotten, yet no one else doesn’t even if they’ve worked hard for it. And as Underwood herself is considered a Millennial, there are still people in their early 40s who have to rent property because the banks and mortgage lenders say they don’t make enough to afford a basic house somewhere.

Wealth inequality is at its worse since the Gilded Age. And Trump has shown that he doesn’t care for anyone who isn’t rich and wealthy like him. The only saving grace is we’ll never have a President candidate like him again. Let’s face it, Trump got elected back in 2016 because a lot of Americans were stupid enough to believe his bullshit and they were angry at Obama and didn’t want a woman in office. He got re-elected in 2024 because racists and misogynists didn’t want Kamala Harris in the Oval Office.

A lot of the Boomers who supported him are dying off. My mom was one of them. But there are people out there who will always vote for Republicans or against Democrats. Yet, as more and more Boomers die off in the next four years, the Gen Xers have become divided and their lack of access to the same healthcare their parents and grandparents flourished under have been dying at younger ages. I unlikely think a lot of younger people will say we need to elected another older person who is out of touch. I mean by 2028, even the Gen Xers will be in their 60s.

Also, it’s very likely Trump may not live to the end of his term. He’s 78 and is now the oldest person to be sworn in as President, even older than Joe Biden by a few months. He constantly gets angry and upset while eating foods that would clog artery valves and raise cholesterol levels on anyone his age. And just because he drinks Diet Cokes doesn’t mean it’s any healthier for him. I don’t think he is good at exercising and he doesn’t even play golf like others do. He’s all about doing the bare minimum.

I also think his crazy rants and pardoning of violent criminals might be the leverage J.D. Vance needs to enact the 25th Amendment removing him from office. You can’t look at someone like Trump and not think that he has some form of mental illness, whether it’s dementia of Alzheimer’s. I don’t wish any harm against him, but I’ll be very surprised if he’s still around four years from today and is as fully capable as people want to say he is.

The people who spent all that money to travel to Washington, D.C. only to be screwed over as he moved the inauguration indoors need to see this as a sign of things to come. You’re going to constantly get screwed over by him. Trump didn’t want to have an outdoor ceremony. He didn’t want to do the parade. He just wanted to do the bare minimum with all the important people kissing his ass.

As Carlin once said, “It’s one big club and you ain’t in it.”

Even more comical is all these people will be stuck with Vance for the rest. And Vance is a little weasel of a man who will never be their great homoerotic superdaddy. Ergo, this will be the final con of Trump to leave his followers with someone they didn’t like and don’t want to take all the blames for his terrible administration.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
