I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Ruth Westheimer or just commonly known as Dr. Ruth. The grandmotherly type of woman with her smaller stature became popular during the 1980s as the Sexual Revolution ended and the AIDS Epidemic began.
For the most part, she was mostly the butt of many jokes for the way she discussed sexual activity during the Reaganeighties when the powers that be wanted to push that in secret as it had been during the 1950s era that the Republicans of the time romanticized.
Despite that, she had her first radio show Sexually Speaking in 1980 followed by The Dr. Ruth Show on TV. She authored 37 books. She managed to have a jovial attitude and demeanor when she spoke. During a time when most people didn’t really want to discuss sex, she brought it to the forefront.
Born in Germany and Jewish, she was moved to Switzerland before the outbreak of war when she was still a child. She lost her parents during the Holocaust believed to have died or been killed while at Auschwitz. Maybe it was because she saw what suppressing information can do to a society that she so actively spent half of her talking about a subject many didn’t think we should.
And despite the jokes and comments, she still managed to continue to education people for decades. On Friday, July 12, she reportedly passed away at 96 surrounded by family.
Rest in power, Dr. Ruth.
