No longer can the Republican Party call themselves the Party of Lincoln. No longer can the Republican Party say they are for limited government considering they want to have more governmental control on people and policies. And no longer can they say they are the party of good Christian values and law and order as they are still supporting a man convicted of paying off a woman who he had sex with while his wife was pregnant with his own child.
On May 30, just two days shy of the four-year anniversary of where protestors were hit with tear gas and forcibly removed from Lafayette Square so Donald Trump could do a callous photo op in front of a church holding a Bible upside down, he was found guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. This was in regards to a hush money for having sex with Stephanie Gregory Clifford, or Stormy Daniels as she is known in the adult film industry.
Normally both of these incidents would’ve been the type of thing that might have spelled a political nightmare for a candidate as their political career would be numbered. Yet, the Republican Party now is so desperate to remain in power, all logic and rational thought has been eliminated. Michael Whatley, chair of the Republican Nation Convention, said that contingency plans are underway if Trump is officially sentenced on July 11, a few days before the RNC is scheduled to start on July 15 in Milwaukee. That means if Trump has to report to prison or a temporary jail facility after his sentencing, the RNC is still considering nominating him.
This conviction came one week away from the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, otherwise known as D-Day, during World War II. It was a large offensive movement that helped changed the course of the war. Leading forces in Europe was Dwight D. Eisenhower. Less than a decade later, he would become the 34th President of the United States. Today, 70 years later, the Republican Party is so far away than what it was during his administration. You could almost say Eisenhower would be viewed as a Democrat or liberal if he was around today. The GOP has been chasing Eisenhower ever since Richard Nixon was defeated by John F. Kennedy.
They just never realized that maybe what made Eisenhower so popular was that he spoke to a lot of Americans of all political beliefs. He wasn’t perfect. No one is. But we got the interstate highway system and involved in the space race. Eisenhower could’ve done more with race relations but more people cared about a booming economy than where black people were allowed to sit at a diner. Almost immediately after Kennedy was elected, the John Birch Society got in bed with the extreme Republicans to switch to a more conservative party.
And to do this, they had to get ugly. Pictures of Kennedy with a bullseye around him were distributed. Wanted posters saying he was treasonous were released. Sound familiar? They said the same thing about Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. You’re treasonous to people if they don’t agree with you. Yet, we have rules and laws in this country and you can’t just say the President needs to be impeached because you don’t like him.
I remember it was June 5, 2021 that I was driving through Wagoner, Okla. on my way back from Tulsa. Wagoner was having its annual Summerfest that weekend in the downtown area. I clearly saw as I passed by the festival a booth had been erected with the words “Impeach Biden” for everyone to see. Impeach him for what? He hasn’t been in office for six months at the time. It didn’t matter. People actually thought Trump was going to have Biden and his administration arrested on live TV at the 2021 inauguration.
I also need to remind you this event wasn’t a political rally but a community fun-filled family-oriented event. But it shows you how far down the rabbit hole people have gotten. Some people I went to college with said their in-laws sent their own grandchild a birthday card and had to note on the back of the envelope about how bad liberals and Democrats are. A woman I grew up with posted on line with her underage son how happy she was that she didn’t raise a liberal child. Another woman online posted her parents cheered the fact that she couldn’t have kids by saying that she won’t be raising any liberal children.
This intolerable hatred and cruelty is the only thing keeping them going. Yet, even the moderates are getting fed up. Two of my close friends are more conservative minded than I, but the last five years, they have changed their tunes some. We still don’t agree on everything. We’re not supposed to. But we agree this can’t keep going any further.
Earlier this month, CBS Sunday Morning ran a story where Ted Koppel was interviewing Trump supporters in Pennsylvania. Now, Koppel may be one of the last objective TV journalists we have. He’s been accused by both sides of favoring on political side so that means he’s doing something correct. Anyway. as he talked to these people, most of them were 55 and up you could see what the problem is. They’ve been fed the same lies and been repeating them over and over, they believe it’s truth.
The Republican Party since Nixon has worked on acquiring people in rural America and the South as its members. This, of course, has led to the stereotype that being from the country or rural area means you’re stupid. That’s not the case. The Atlanta-area is a thriving major metropolitan with many colleges, entertainment and businesses. In North Carolina, there is the Research Triangle of Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. You also have the diverse Bohemian arts communities in Appalachia such as Asheville, N.C. and Athens, Ga.
And Pennsylvania itself is home to many colleges and universities as well as metropolitan areas. Yet, it’s also part of Appalachia. And being someone who grew up in the foothills of Appalachia, there’s a stereotype people have allowed politicians to exploit – that we’re uneducated and racists. You couldn’t find many black people at the Trump rally, even though I’m sure if they were there they were being treated badly. Most Trumpsters have grown up in a world that is forever changing before their eyes but they don’t want it to.
They weep for the days of Eisenhower but don’t realize what made them so memorable is what they are against. Corporations and millionaires paid higher taxes. They were also required to treat their workers better. It may have been white workers but they got better pay and benefits and labor unions were more common. It’s also easier to look at the time around you when you were young and didn’t know any better as a magical time. That’s my main issue with Gen Xers and their romance of the 1980s. If they would stop and think about how really bad it was for a lot of people, they wouldn’t be so happy. But most people want to live in their altered view of reality.
That’s why Trumpsters bring up Hunter Biden or Hillary Clinton, still almost eight years after she didn’t win the 2016 election. They have to have a scary boogerbear that is lurking in the shadows ready to pounce. It’s the same way they went after Obama during his Presidency and Bill Clinton during his. There’s always been a criticism of a sitting President, no matter who it is. And Biden and Obama deserved some criticism. But after Bill Clinton was elected, it seemed there was an intolerable hatred and cruelty not seen since Kennedy.
The Republicans, mostly aided by people like Rush Limbaugh, went after Chelsea Clinton, who was a child. She was off-limits. Or she should have been. It didn’t matter. Bristol Palin deserves to be treated fairly. Chelsea Clinton doesn’t. Neither does Sasha and Malia Obama. When someone tells you who they are, believe them.
This ugliness has been forming for 30 years and it’s typical of the Boomer generation to act this way. And it’s no surprise that is primarily who are usually at these rallies and supporting Trump. During his 2015 announcement speech, he spewed racist lies and that’s what people wanted to hear. And the Republican Party let Trump say it because the money kept rolling in. That was until it looked in the final days of the 2016 election, he might lose.
Then, they allowed him to do what he wanted up until Jan. 6, 2021 and then they backtracked. Then, they sided with him again because the money kept rolling in. Now, they’re talking about it as a witch-hunt to get more money. It isn’t. Trump had the option to choose the jurors. I’m not talking about his defense got to choose the jurors. They always can pick or strike jury members. He got special privileges He was cited for contempt of court 10 times. Ten times! He continued to blast the judge and prosecution outside the courtroom.
Now, I have been friendly with many judges over the years. I know when they are being serious and when they are being cordial. The majority of the time when you are in their courtroom, there is a line you do not cross. Trump didn’t just cross it, he buried it under his lies and constant whining. If he hadn’t been a former President, he would’ve been thrown in jail. Larry Flynt was thrown in jail for contempt and he was a millionaire.
What people are really saying is they’re mad because Trump can’t do whatever he wants. And remember this has always been the “Law and Order” party that going back to Nixon, they have vehemently criticized anti-war protestors. Cannabis became a schedule I controlled drug. Cannabis?! Yes, because they wanted to stop people from selling and doing it. But then in the 1980s as the crack epidemic spread, punishments were more severe than cocaine possession. Yet, it’s the same components. That’s because the crack cocaine was being used by poor white trash and black people mostly. And cocaine was being used by the Wall Street people who were buddies of Reagan.
They have two sides for every punishment. What Trump did is commonly referred to as a “white collar crime.” But as Jon Stewart pointed out on The Daily Show on June 3, this should send the message that white collar crimes should get the same amount of punishment if not more than people who get busted for petty crimes. Ken Buck, a former Republican Congressman from Colorado, was being interviewed and he was acting like it was a bad thing for America, even though he has been vocal against Trump. It’s funny how most of the people criticizing the conviction yet saying they don’t support Trump are acting like it shouldn’t matter in this one case.
However, when you ask them why it shouldn’t matter in this case, they can’t give you a definitive answer as they say it can apply to all former Presidents. Yes, that’s usually what happens when law are broken. Only now, conservatives are ranting and raving they are going to come after the Democrats. Needless to say, Hunter Biden, who isn’t an elected official and never been one, has been tried the past few days on charges of possession of firearms while using narcotics. And his father says he will NOT pardon him because the elder Bideb understands the law.
Listen, Trump did NOT have to run for President. I know conservatives have created a lot of lies to tell themselves and others to make people believe that Trump is doing this because he has to. They’re acting like he was commanded by God, but that’s bullshit! Natasha Owen, a conservative musician, and I’m used that word very loosely, has released “The Chosen One” that pretty much excuses Trump’s behavior and criminal acts because true Christians are imperfect. Well, then, so the same can be said Biden, the Clintons, the Obamas and so on and so on.
There is a dangerous cult like mentality and Koppel was showing that. The Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection coup attempt is just a warning sign of things to come. Yet, most of these people are older in age which makes me think do they think younger people are going to support them. From what I’ve heard, being a Gen Xer myself, a lot of Gen Zers and Millennials hate Boomers with such a passion it makes whatever I’ve said sound like Mr. Rogers. A lot of younger voters don’t romanticize Trump or the Republican Party.
They are very, very angry at what’s happening. A lot of people are calling for Trump to drop out. About 49 percent of independent voters want Trump to drop out according to the Morning Consult poll conducted on May 31, the day after he was convicted. And an ABC News/Ispos poll concluded with 52 percent of independents saying Trump should drop out with 67 percent of them are considered “double haters” who don’t care for Biden or Trump.
The conviction isn’t what Trump nor the GOP needs at this time. There are five months before the general election. And as the Georgia courts had more or less halted the interference case indefinitely until after the election, it’s obvious that the only way the GOP can stay in power is to do whatever they can to extend it. They have no strategy except to just stay in power by any means necessary. That’s what they hope to do with Project 2025.
But no one lives forever. Younger voters may be upset with how Biden has handled the Israeli-Palestine War but it doesn’t appear Trump nor the GOP have any agenda except to support Israel too. And Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu means more genocide. And people trying to compare Trump to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has backfired because as I have noted, Trump got a very fair trial. Navalny didn’t. Even his lawyers were arrested.
How much longer do you think younger voters will continue to buy what their elders have been shoveling? With it being Pride Month, more people are acceptable of same-sex couples and transgender people are becoming more acceptable. It’s not 100 percent but it’s a progress. The same is said for interracial couples who are appearing more in commercials as well as same-sex couples.
It’s ironic the freedom that most on the right say is being infringed upon isn’t happening. What is going on is the pie slices are getting more evenly among others at the table. And when you’re getting a smaller piece for the first time or your pieces are getting smaller and smaller, you’re finally seeing the other people at the table are getting happier. But white people and especially white men are still getting a bigger piece.
Most Millennials, Gen Zers and even Gen Xers aren’t buying boats and big cars like their elders, they’re finally buying the toys they didn’t get as a child. They’re parents spent years telling them, “You have McDonalds money? You have G.I. Joe money?” Now they have that money and they will buy it. Sooner and hopefully not later, a lot of voters will start choosing real equality over the fake equality they’ve been told.
