Ok, show of hands, who the hell knew who Bobbi Storm was before this week?
I’m going to be blunt with all Christian figures. No one really cares about your faith other than you. No one wants you to tell us about your love of Jesus and God. No one wants to try to make us change. No one wants to hear you sing about your love of Jesus and God. Please sit down and shut the fuck up!
If Christians can extend this same hostility to Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses and especially Muslims and Jewish people, then they can take it. Storm, who is a part of the gospel group Maverick City Music, has been nominated for two Grammys for Best Gospel Album and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song. She was on a Delta Airlines flight when she mentioned these nominations and began to sing a song, “We Can’t Forget Him.”
Want to guess who they’re talking about?
She was told by the flight crew to “be quiet” as she was standing in the center aisle singing the song. When a flight crew supervisor approached her again, she responded “I’m doing what the Lord is telling me to do.”
Ever wonder why the Lord doesn’t tell people to please be quiet? The supervisor said if she didn’t be quiet, she could be kicked off the plane. And watching the video, Storm seems to play the same Christian entitlement spiel about how she’s trying to spread the word. Then she pulls what a lot of Christians do when they try to get their way – she poses the question to others by putting them on the spot.
If this feels like deja vu all over again as Yogi Beara once said, then it happened in April of 2022 where a group of Christian singers decided to perform, complete with some douchebag and an acoustic guitar. If there’s anything worse than hearing Christian music in public against your will, it’s hearing some guy strumming a guitar in public.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love music. I played drums in the band in school. We need more musicians and band programs in schools to get people interested. I love watching videos online of people jamming out. But I’m making that decision to listen to them. They present music on a medium. I choose to listen to it. That’s the way things are and should be.
If I’m traveling somewhere, the last place I want to hear some wanna guitarist playing “Wonderwall” is a plane up in the sky with nowhere to go. There’s a reason garage bands perform in garages, so they can leave the door closed. My neighbors do that. My grandfather was in a band and they used to perform indoors to practice. They didn’t go out on the front lawn and just perform for the entire neighborhood.
Musicians have ettiquette and Christians need to respect that ettiquette, not play the victim. I think Storm may have realized the damage she may have caused to her group and then issued a video hoping the supervisor doesn’t get in trouble. If she was really a Christian, she wouldn’t want someone else’s livelihood at risk. A Delta spokesperson told CBS News: “For the safety of our customers and crew, it’s always important to follow crew instructions.”
For God’s sake, Christians have usurped an entire Pagan holiday that was the the Saturnalis Winter Solstice celebrated on Dec. 25 under the Julian calendar and turned into a mass celebration that lasts for months usually beginning after the stores get ride of all the “Back to School” stuff. You think they’d be happy sitting on the sidelines and letting some others on the team play while they’re way ahead.
If this was a Death Metal band or some especially an Islamic person singing a song on a plane, how long do you think it would take before someone starting complaining? You don’t get special treatment just because you chose a certain religion to follow. That’s part of the problem. You are no special than anyone else. But the Christian dogma has made people think they are. And they can do no wrong. “All the credit but none of the blame” is the Christian motto.
My ex used to attend a family reunion with a cousin’s family would set up speakers and perform Christian music the entire time. And it could be loud. They would often have this at a state park on the weekend where others are trying to enjoy themselves and have a good time. But because it’s Christian music, no one ever said anything – until they finally got tired of it. And as usual, her family made her and others who didn’t want to hear it feel guilty.
I pretty much quit going because I got tired of it. Worse, this cousin’s family was always the loudest and often getting into the most trouble. Yet, they were trying to make others feel they were the problem. After a while, many in my ex’s family just quit going. You don’t get total absolution just because you can read a certain book or ask for prayers, most of which are usually selfish and only to help yourself or your inner circle.
Things seem to be getting worse because social media has spread and created a bunch of “Social Media Christians.” In college, I heard them referred to as “Sunday Christians” but I’m sure you can think of the type. Those that act a certain way around those they like and the worst around others. Social media has made people want to look better in the eyes of people they barely knew or hung around with growing up. And the one way to look better is to post Christian memes and make Biblical posts.
Ironically, I know of all the people I follow who are true Christian and who are posers. While I wouldn’t doubt someone’s spirituality, you can notice signs, mainly with the way they post and what they post about. Racial bigoty and criticism of the LGBTQIA community has spread. Storm is black and so was the flight crew supervisor, so this isn’t a racial issue. But people are already starting to turn it into an anti-Christian thing.
No, it’s not. People need to follow the rules for the safety of others. That’s the Christian thing to do. And to respect others’s boundaries. I’m sure a lot of people on the plane didn’t really want to hear music. They just wanted to get to their destinations. You never know what other travelers are having to deal with.
Worse, this may have affected the group’s chances. I’m sure it will bring them some popularity and success. If they win both or either category at the Grammy’s, people will say it was the publicity that they may have caused to get more attention. If they lose, people will say they lost because of the publicity. And while some say the awards themselves are rigged, they should win on their own merits – not popularity.
What do you think? Please comment.
