Sympathy For The Devil?

On July 26, during a press meeting, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was talking to the media when he suddenly stopped and just stared blankely ahead. Seconds passed but it was enough for everyone around him to realize something wasn’t right. Was he having a stroke? Was it a TIA (transient ischemic attack), a type of stroke that last a few minutes, often called a mini-stroke which could be a percursor for a major stroke?

We don’t know yet. At 81, McConnell is the Senate Minority Leader and has reported he’s feeling fine. And while a lot of expressed support for him, to be honest, it’s not earned. Why is a major Senate official behaving like this? It should be a sign it’s time for McConnell to step aside. But I have the suspension that McConnell isn’t leaving Congress unless it’s feet first. There’s no way in Hell McConnell will ever give a millimeter of resistance.

And that’s been his biggest problem. This man has single-handedly caused more problems in the last two decades leading to the rise of Trumpism, a monster he can’t stop but is willing to ride the coattails on the path of destruction. In 2016, he prevented President Barack Obama from allowing even an hearing for the appointment of Merrick Garland when Antonin Scalia passed away in mid-February of that year, a good nine months before the election and 11 months since the start of a new Presidency. His rationale was that a President in an election year shouldn’t be allowed to name a replacement. Even though that’s what the Constitution states.

Then, in 2020, when Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Sept. 18, less than two months before the general election, he fast-tracked a hearing to get Amy Coney Barret on the Supreme Court. And this led to the overthrow of Roe v. Wade and other conservative controversial rulings. Some people on the left might want to pray for his health, but I don’t. I can’t. I’m not religious. I don’t care one iota for McConnell. He’s 81. Reports have said he has a history of falling down. This may be because of the limp he has from the suffering polio as a child.

This along with the shingles keeping Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who’s 90, from voting has some people asking if there should be age limits on both House of Representative members as well as Senators. Pharmacists in the Washington, D.C. area say they are filling more and more medication for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. This was back in 2017 after we saw Sen. John McCain’s behavior on the Senate floor that was later claimed to have happened due to a blood clot. McCain was McConnell’s age when he passed.

But aside from questioning if Congressmembers should be playing shuffleboard rather than voting on key issues, why should anyone show any sympathy for McConnell on anything? Aside from making the Supreme Court right-leaning, he also blocked and slowed several of Obama’s appointment to judges at the lower levels. This was way different when the Democrats controlled the Senate for President George W. Bush’s last two years where they approved 68 positions with little fuss.

McConnell even at one time it was his goal to keep Obama a one-term president. But I feel there’s more about racism when it comes to Obama than say Bill Clinton or Joe Biden. Let’s not forget he grew up in Alabama. So I’m not believing for one moment that he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or other Civil Rights members. I’m almost certain he was among the many who probably did and said awful things to the protestors. And just because he’s married to Elaine Chao, who was born in Tiawan, doesn’t mean that they sing “We are the World” every morning. I’ve known a few racist people who in fact, have biracial children, or grandchildren, or are biracial themselves.

Biden, who McConnell has been critical of, has reached out to show support. People online on social media, who have been critical of him, have expressed their sympathies and concerns to McConnell and his family. These are Democrats and leftists, the exact people McConnell wants to do away with. I know they say “Kill them with kindness,” but I’m very selective of my kindness. You wouldn’t expect anything from Trump and he’s been very quiet.

Even worse, the Republican Party has shown just how caring they are for others who have health issues. Remember how they went after Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, when he got attacked in his own home by someone with a hammer? This was when Pelosi was Speaker of the House. Where was the sympathy? Nowhere from them. There was a lot of conspiracy theories about David DePape, the man who attacked Paul Pelosi, mainly that he was a gay lover. Paul is 83. Where’s all the sympathy for this elderly man?

And then you have Hunter Biden’s struggles with substance abuse following the death of his brother, Beau. There wasn’t much symptahy from the right on that. President Biden is shown tripping walking up some stairs and people treated it like it was a time for him to step down as President. It’s a double standard that some people deserve sympathy while others deserve scorn and mocking.

As for McConnell, whose been a U.S. Senator since 1985 when he was younger than I am now, has had 38 years of access to the best health-care in the country. And he, along with other Republicans, have kept people from getting access to health-care. This is poetic justice or karma. You treat people who you feel are beneath you like they’re awful then watch as they revel in your pain and misery. It’s like the part from A Christmas Carol where Ebenezer Scrooge sees people having a ball talking about how he’s dead.

Jesus Christ, look what happened 10 years ago when Margaret Thatcher died. Many in the United Kingdom celebrated her death even though she had dementia. There were signs reading “The Bitch is Dead” and “Iron Lady? Rust in Peace.” What goes around comes around. You reap what you sow.

Not that I’m wishing McConnell anymore ill-will, but I anticipate a lot of Americans will be celebrating his death as well. Those who want to pray for his family can do so. This is America. They have that right. We also have the right to say what we think without restrictions from the government to an extend. I don’t want to be told to rally around someone as awful as McConnell and his family as his health declines. He’s done nothing for those in Kentucky or Alabama. Why should we care about him?

How you’re going to be remembered is a testament to how you lived your life. Rush Limbaugh has been dead for over two years now. You don’t hear a lot about him. There’s a reason because he did a lot in his time to drive a wedge beween people the same way McConnell and many other conservatives, Christians and Republicans (oh, my!) did starting in the 1980s.

How do you wantt to be remembered?

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
