Depending on what happens on Tuesday, June 13 at the arraignment in federal court for former President Donald J. Trump will more than likely determine the future of the Republican Party. At the arraignment, Trump could be ordered jailed even though his lawyers will agrue a bail so he can continue to travel and hold rallies to campaign. Even a house arrest could very quickly and easily damper his chances to remain a front-runner.
The Republican Party has talked about “law and order” but there’s no way getting around what happened this past week with Trump actually being charged with espionage. On HBO Max there is a movie about Reality Winner, who went to prison just for taking one (just one) document from the National Security Agency where she worked. It was juse one piece of paper that she folded and stuffed into her pantyhose to get it out of the building. In Trump’s case, these were boxes upon boxes stacked around the Mar-a-Lago Resort.
When I worked in Americus, Ga., the Sumpter County Court Records room wasn’t that loaded with papers and it had those shelves you could move around. When I worked at the Wagoner Tribune, one of the oldest newspapers in Oklahoma, the bound books of past papers only took up two or three bookshelves. The popular picture of about a dozen boxes in a bathroom just shows how dangerous and irresponsible Trump was as President.

It’s quite obvious the Republican Party is trying right now to remain optimistic because they don’t want to abandon Trump too early. But if he’s arraigned and taken into custody, then they have to cut him lose. What are they expecting? For Trump to run his campaign from now until November of 2024 from a jail cell? Winner was denied bail twice. And she only took one document.
With the exception of former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who’s also running for President as a Republican, very few GOP leaders have stepped up to demand Trump drop out of the race. Many of them along with conservative media have pointed the finger at Hillary Clinton again. Fox News creepoid and (poster boy for date rape) Jesse Walters was quick to bring up Clinton and the emails on-air, which Jessica Tarlov was quickly to say it has “absolutely nothing” to do with Clinton.
And she’s right. The issue with the e-mails cost Clinton the 2016 Presidential Election which is what the Republican Party wanted. She was cleared by the FBI. The Bush/Cheney Administration had done the same thing with e-mails. But Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has also brought it up saying that Clinton got special treatment over Trump. The man is pandering so much it’s not even funny. This happened in his state and he knows he is still second banana to Trump.
If it had been a few items that had been thrown into a box, Trump would’ve had a better defense that it was all an accident. But he refused to give these documents back and even tried to say he “declassified” them. Trump is accused of sharing these documents with other people. He transported these documents possibly to use as bargaining deals or just to show off. Who know?
With all these documents being transported by plane and transferred from the plane to a vehicle and from a vehicle into the house, it’s hard to argue it was a mix-up. People are actually trying to argue that he had every right to take the documents with him. But the emails which someone would only see through accessing a username and password, more than likely on a secure network, is worse?
And let me remind all of you out that Trump didn’t have to run for President. He ran for President for the simple reason that he wanted to make money. He wanted to rip off people. He’s a grifter, a swindler, a con-man and likely a convicted felon. He’s had so many bankrupt companies and businesses, how could someone possibly think he would have the abilities to be President?
Too many people will see this as revenge. This isn’t President Joe Biden doing it nor is it Attorney General Merrick Garland. The grand jury went through the evidence and voted to indict. It might be hard for some Trump supporters to understand because they never payed any interest to politics or the inner workings of government until 2016. They thought the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection coup attempt would’ve gone off smoothly and everyone would be okay with it.
Just because Trump told Clinton he would put her in jail doesn’t mean that we can put any political challengers in jail. And that’s something hard for people to understand because what they’re seeing in Florida with DeSantis is exactly that. But there’s pushback and Florida is just becoming more of a fucked-up deranged state. I mean, Nazis were protesting outside DisneyWorld. Eventually, people who live in and love Florida will have to say enough is enough.
DeSantis may be getting some support from Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, but the GOP is still heavily divided between the two. Trump is using this to get more campaign donations and while DeSantis earned over $8 million within 24 hours, it doesn’t mean eight million people support him. I’d be very surprised if a mere one million donors contributed money. Trump is still everone’s favorite and he may just take the GOP down with him if they continue to support him.
If for some reason, Trump is still allowed to campaign and the GOP doesn’t support him, he’ll split the ticket. The best thing for them to do is to cut him loose as soon as possible. This is the type of thing that could end their party.
