Please Remember Those No Longer Here This Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day. One of my peeves is when people say “Happy Memorial Day.” There’s nothing to be happy about people who were killing in action, or died as the result of their war wounds. And I’m talking about those who became addicted to alcohol or drugs to help with their pain. I’m also mentioning those who took their own lives.

This isn’t Veterans Day. That’s on Nov. 11. We’ve already had Armed Forces Day. That’s on the third Saturday of May. Memorial Day is for those not here. It’s for the families of those that lost their loved ones. About 20-25 miles from where I live is the town of Coweta, Okla., which has a dark history record. It lost the most per capita of any town/village/city in the Vietnam War. Eight military lost their lives officially during the war. No one knows how many lost their lives after they came back with the effects of Agent Orange or the bad memories endng what lives they had.

If you’re off work today, please attend a cemetery if one is nearby to pay your respects.

I'm an award winning journalist and photographer who covered dozens of homicides and even interviewed President Jimmy Carter on multiple occasions. A back injury in 2011 and other family medical emergencies sidelined my journalism career. But now, I'm doing my own thing, focusing on movies (one of my favorite topics), current events and politics (another favorite topic) and just anything I feel needs to be posted. Thank you for reading.
